HomeTownSD Scores ASM Global as Arena Operator and Capital Partner in Bid to Redevelop Midway

SAN DIEGO – HomeTownSD has joined forces with ASM Global as an operating and capital partner in its bid to deliver a world-class arena and entertainment district for San Diego. ASM Global is the preeminent management and content partner of more than 350 venues worldwide, investing in marquee arenas across the globe.

As the world’s leading venue management company and producer of live event experiences, ASM Global’s choice to partner with HometownSD demonstrates the strength of its proposal and builds on an already formidable team in contention to redevelop the Midway property.

“We evaluated the three proposals in contention and determined HomeTownSD to be the most visionary and viable arena plan and their team the most capable of delivering,” said Ron Bension, President and CEO, ASM Global. “It is not easy to finance a world-class arena and ensure its continued operation over the long term. HomeTownSD has crafted a plan that prioritizes financial viability as well as market and community fit – all essential to successfully turning arena plans into reality.”

“With the addition of ASM Global, HomeTownSD is the only team with a partner who has operated, capitalized, developed and delivered multiple successful world-class arenas,” said Chuck Steedman, longtime ASM Global Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development who now serves as their Consultant. “Other teams simply have never done this.”

ASM Global will join HomeTownSD’s lead arena developer, JMI Sports, to deliver a modern, flexible arena tailored to the San Diego market. JMI Sports has both national arena experience as well as local success – having developed two of San Diego’s most successful sports and entertainment venues – PetCo Park and Snapdragon Stadium.

Together, they will bring San Diego’s arena into the 21st century to serve the city’s home teams, as well as an array of elite music and entertainment acts to the region for decades to come.

“We are thrilled to bring ASM Global on board,” said Erik Judson, CEO, JMI Sports. “They bring unparalleled venue management and event production experience – with proven success in the San Diego market. We are proud to be the only team to secure an arena operating and investment partner of this caliber.”

Along with HomeTownSD, ASM Global shares deep roots in the San Diego community having operated the Sports Arena since 2008. With global experience in arena development and live events along with a keen understanding of the San Diego market, they also bring to bear strong relationships with current Sports Arena tenants, including San Diego’s home teams.

“There is no better partner than ASM Global to bring to life the entertainment experience and invest in the development of a state-of-the-art arena for San Diego,” said Sarah Kruer-Jager, project lead for HomeTownSD and Partner at Monarch Group. “They will create value and drive profitability with best-in-class local operational execution, strong financial capabilities, and a proven commitment to San Diego.”

Their housing proposal is a mixed-income community that maximizes affordable and middle-income housing – and seamlessly integrates an arena and entertainment district that will create jobs and catalyze local business.
